Why Use Water-Activated Gummed Tape?

Water-activated tape offers a strong, professional-looking seal for corrugated shipping cartons. Here is how it compares with conventional pressure-sensitive packing tape, staples and carton-sealing glue.

Compare Sealing Methods

How it works

A Bond With the Carton

Gummed tape has a dry adhesive that becomes tacky when moistened. When applied correctly to a suitable corrugated carton, the adhesive bonds with the paper surface. Unlike pressure-sensitive tape, it is not applied by pressing an already-tacky adhesive onto the box.

Both reinforced and non-reinforced water-activated tapes are available. The appropriate grade depends on carton weight, shipping conditions and the sealing requirements of the operation.

Visible Tamper Evidence

Removing well-applied gummed tape often damages the carton surface, making interference easier to notice. This is not a guarantee against tampering.

Neat Carton Appearance

A single, centered strip can create a tidy seal without the multiple overlapping strips sometimes used with plastic tape.

Consistent Tape Lengths

A manual or electric tape dispenser feeds, moistens and cuts measured strips, helping packing stations maintain a repeatable process.

Paper-Based Options

Paper gummed tape may be compatible with corrugated recycling streams. Reinforcement, coatings and local recycling rules affect acceptance.

Sealing method comparison

Gummed Tape vs. Plastic Packing Tape

Pressure-sensitive tape is convenient and needs no water. Gummed tape can be especially useful where carton security, a clean appearance and standardized sealing are priorities. Neither method is universally best for every carton or environment.

Carton bondForms a bond with the paper surface when properly applied.Adheres by pressure and surface contact; performance depends on adhesive and carton conditions.
Tamper evidenceRemoval often disrupts carton fibers. Some tapes can be removed with less visible carton damage; security grades are also available.
Number of stripsOne properly selected strip may be sufficient for many carton seals. One or more strips may be used depending on tape grade and carton requirements.
EquipmentRequires moistening, typically with a manual or electric dispenser. Can be applied with a handheld tape gun or case sealer.
RecyclingSome paper-based grades can remain on cartons in recycling streams.Acceptance varies by tape material and local processing requirements.

Results vary with tape grade, application technique, carton quality, temperature and shipping conditions. Test the selected tape with your actual cartons.

Packing operations

Efficiency and Operator Handling

Repeated use of a handheld tape gun requires the operator to hold and move the applicator across each carton. A bench-mounted water-activated tape dispenser changes that workflow: the operator retrieves a prepared strip and applies it to the box.

Measured lengths can help reduce unnecessary tape use and make the process more consistent. Actual labor and material savings depend on carton sizes, tape selection, equipment and packing volume.

Where Gummed Tape Makes Sense

  • Corrugated cartons requiring a neat, consistent seal
  • Shipping operations concerned with visible evidence of opening
  • Pack stations that use repeated tape lengths
  • Businesses evaluating reinforced paper tape for heavier cartons

Other sealing methods

How Does It Compare With Staples and Glue?

Gummed Tape vs. Staples

Staples can provide a mechanical closure but require suitable cartons, correct equipment and proper placement. Exposed staples can create sharp edges during carton opening. Gummed tape offers a seal without metal fasteners and is often easier for recipients to open safely.

Gummed Tape vs. Glue

Cold-glue and hot-melt systems can work well in automated carton sealing. They require appropriate application equipment and process control. Water-activated tape can be a practical alternative for manual and semi-automated packing stations without an integrated gluing line.
